Pollutant Dispersion in an Urban Setting |
|
The dispersal of toxins in
the atmosphere is of concern for various military and urban planning
purposes. In addition to the nature of the toxin, factors such as the
topology, wind direction, and ambient conditions also influence the
nature of the dispersion.

Natural Gas Leak in an Apartment |
|
CFD is an ideal tool for modeling
gaseous dispersion within building structures. Natural gas leaks from
common household items (e.g., stoves, dryers, etc.), and the resulting
spread of the gas can be quickly modeled. |

Nuclear Waste Storage |
|
CFD is used to
perform a complete fluid and thermal analysis of a nuclear waste storage
unit. Numerical modeling of the system includes thermally-driven turbulent
flow and heat transfer by convection, conduction and radiation. The CFD
results show good agreement with the experimental temperature measurements
available for the canister, heat shields and concrete walls. The ability to
simultaneously predict flow patterns and temperature distributions makes
Computational Fluid Dynamics a very efficient tool for assessing the overall
cooling design of nuclear waste storage systems. |
